The need to modernize the overnight stay declaration circuit

A press release from the National Tourism Federation (FNT), released yesterday Wednesday, underlines the need to reconsider the system for evaluating the evolution of overnight stays in classified establishments. To this end, several federations linked to tourism as well as certain presidents of regional tourism centers are calling on the authorities concerned to put an end to guest houses, considered by them to be unfair competition.

In this press release from the FNT it is specified that: “The management system for tourism activity in Morocco is based on dashboards which must be reliable and credible (…). The implementation of this action plan will allow an evaluation of feedback, better cross-checking and analysis of data as quickly as possible, in order to foresee possible areas for improvement and readjustment,” we can read in this press release.

Monitoring will be ensured, specifies the FNT, by a mixed commission led by the supervisory department, in partnership with the FNT, the FNIH, the ANIT, the FNAVM, the CRT of Marrakech, Agadir and the Tourism Observatory.

Guest houses: unfair competition according to the FNT

This press release follows that of the Tourism Observatory which linked the financial crisis which is hitting the main source markets as well as the events which shook the sub-region and the decline in tourist activity in Morocco.

In order to quantify it, the FNT considers that « it is true that the current reporting system does not take into consideration nights recorded in guest houses and furnished apartments which escape any control of the administration. Hoteliers who are members of the FNIH and the FNT have always complained about this unfair practice which in no way contributes to the creation of value, social or fiscal, and which presents, in addition, a significant security risk. »

Call to authorities

On this occasion, the signatories of the FNT press release, including Ali Ghannam and Fouad Lahbabi respectively president and vice-president of the FNT, ask the authorities concerned to take the necessary measures to put an end to “these forms of informal accommodation, which damage our image, our sector, and to support these entities in integrating the formal accommodation sector”.

Finally, the signatories of the press release say they are convinced that if irregularities have been announced in certain hotel establishments, they can neither be generalized nor endorsed by professionals who operate in “total transparency participating fully in the growth of tourist activity under the impetus of Vision 2010 and 2020”, concludes the press release.
