The Todgha gorges in Morocco
![]()
It is a unique site, the likes of which are few found in the world. It attracts thousands of climbing enthusiasts from all continents. The Todgha Gorges are nature, in its purest form. Its cliffs rise 300 meters high. We are in the High Atlas, where the mountains rise to an altitude of more than 2500 meters. The place inspires serenity and meditation. Great spectacle films such as Lawrence of Arabia have been filmed there.
Hospitality is required throughout the road from Tinghir to the gorges. Just rent a car in Morocco. There are many hostels where you can eat for a small fee. Sports enthusiasts may try to make the journey on foot and, after 4 hours of driving, they will reach this magical and majestic place. A palm grove runs along this steep path. The Berbers we meet there remind us that the place is several thousand years old. Some consider it to be one of the most beautiful regions in the kingdom.
So what can you say when you’re at the bottom of these cliffs and you can just see a strip of blue sky? We feel tiny, almost insignificant. Some of these slopes have never been climbed by man because they tend so vertically. Nature is virgin, wild, in its raw state, made of stone and rocks with colors that turn orange when dusk falls. You can sometimes hear the howls of the wolves that haunt the place. Climbing enthusiasts will tell you that. You should avoid attempting to tackle these walls without the help of an experienced guide. Some people have understood this… unfortunately at their expense. To find a guide, or rent a car in Morocco, there is nothing easier: you have to go to an advertisement site like this one, there are many in Tamtattouchte which rent their services to passing tourists. For heavy loads, during treks, you can also use mules.
