Chefchaouen: Active tourism opportunities highlighted
The city benefits from a hinterland favorable to this type of activity
Strengthen the supply of sustainable tourism products by developing natural resources and improving infrastructure for nature lovers and sports activities. These are the main objectives of a meeting, the work of which ended on Monday, January 30, in Chefchaouen. Organized by the Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima Regional Tourism Council (CRT-TTA) in partnership with the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT), the work of this event culminated after three days of debates and discussions in the adoption of a series of recommendations in relation to their main objective. Among them are those of the establishment of“an action plan developed by the CRT-TTA and its partners for the training of human capital, the development of tourism potential, the development and rehabilitation of certain tourist places as well as the organization of events around active tourism”,according to a press release issued at the end of the closing session of this meeting.
The choice of Chefchaouen for holding this event is not accidental, given that the blue pearl stands out, in addition to its important tourist and historical sites, by its hinterland rich in natural resources making it possible to attract new visitors who love nature and sport. “The invited experts were able to visit different places where the sporting activities available are practiced, according to the natural, geographical and environmental specificities of each place”, continues the same source.
The visits to the different sites during this event made it possible to determine activities to be developed both in Chefchaouen and its hinterland. Among the main points scheduled during this meeting, the formation of a cycling team, which was formed by the participants. This initiative aimed to introduce people to mountain circuits, favorite places for amateurs and professionals of this sporting discipline. “Cycling tourism presents, in addition to the environmental interest, another very important economic one. Since consumption in the application this type of tourism is higher than the international average,”according to the organizers.
It should be noted that in addition to cycling, this meeting saw the creation of other teams allowing them to practice climbing and mountain running in particular. “The various locations and visits to mountain places made it possible to explore more places that could constitute an important link in the active tourism offer to be developed in the province”, adds the same source.
It should be remembered that as part of the promotion of active tourism in Chefchaouen, the Green Mountain-Sport & Development Association organizes annually the “Ultra Trail Chaouen” race, the 2017 edition of which will take place from March 9 to 12 in the blue pearl. This event – which aims to promote the tourist potential of this province – succeeded in attracting, in 2016, and over 150 km of trails, some 300 runners.
