Moroccan tourism declines due to confinement in Europe
No sooner has Morocco begun a gradual revival of its tourism sector than this momentum is faltering. The restrictive measures imposed across Europe have forced it to lower its flag.
More than a dozen foreign airlines have resumed flights to Morocco, thanks to the relaxation of restrictions at the kingdom’s borders. But the accentuation of the health crisis, both in Morocco and abroad, has extinguished all hope among professionals, notes Medias 24. There is no shortage of demand, says Lahcen Zelmat, president of the National Federation of the Hotel Industry in Morocco (FNIH).
However, he notes, this comes up against the various restrictions imposed by European countries, such as in France, the obligation to have a pass to travel. Enough to dampen any desire to travel among foreign tourists, notes the same site, continuing that because of these restrictions, the occupancy rate of Moroccan hotels is only 1%, compared to 14% since January, until October 2020.
“Our usual partners (T.O…) are ready to send us many customers from all over Europe, but the current difficulty lies in how to get them to our hotels,” laments Lahcen Zelmat, adding: “To be honest, we are waiting for a miracle so that an effective vaccine is finally discovered to put an end to these difficulties.”
