Impact of Mondialito on tourism in Morocco: Professionals in the sector show a smile
The FIFA Club World Cup played in the kingdom had a positive impact on the tourism sector. Particularly in Tangier and Rabat, two host cities of the tournament. From February 1 to 11, 2023, Morocco vibrated to the rhythm of the FIFA Club World Cup. A Mondialito that the kingdom organized brilliantly. On a sporting level, we can note a certain disappointment among Moroccan supporters after the early elimination of Wydad from Casablanca. On the other hand, in the tourist aspect, the professionals rubbed their hands, particularly those from Tangier and Rabat, the two cities which hosted the competition. According to Ali Kadiri, president of the Regional Association of the Hotel Industry (ARIH), hotels in Tangier had posted a reservation rate of at least 60%. An increase of 10% compared to the same period in 2022. A significant figure obtained, thanks in particular to the arrivals of numerous Brazilian, Egyptian, American and New Zealand supporters. To further attract visitors and make them appreciate the different facets of Tangier, the Wilaya of the Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region organized, from January 31 to February 6, 2023, several activities in the main squares of the city, such as the Riad Sultan, the Cap Spartel lighthouse, the Alcazar cinema, the Place du 9 Avril, the Place du Mechouar, the fountain in front of the Marina Bay, or even Bab al-Marsa. According to Mr. Kadiri, these cultural events, coupled with the beauty of the opening ceremony, followed by millions of people around the world thanks to the magic of the image, will undoubtedly encourage many tourists to visit the locality. In Rabat too, hoteliers wanted the Mondialito to continue, if it was up to them, since their cash flow moved well during this period. Selling the destination Morocco According to Hassan Bargach, president of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra Regional Tourism Council, and also director of the Sofitel Jardin des Roses hotel, his establishment was already full a week before the start of the tournament. But beyond the numerous overnight stays recorded, this world tournament could be an excellent springboard to further sell the Morocco destination at a lower cost. The media coverage of the event by major global channels, the presence of numerous football stars and international journalists who were full of praise for the kingdom’s beautiful sports infrastructures, bode well for the development of tourism in the coming years. Better still, by brilliantly meeting the organizational challenge, the Moroccan authorities are scoring decisive points and consolidating Morocco’s file for a possible candidacy for the 2030 World Cup. Another global meeting which will have an even greater impact on the tourism sector.
