Tourism, a booming sector that appeals to young people

The training establishments of the Department of Tourism have experienced an unprecedented influx of candidates wishing to access them for the 2023-2024 academic year. The ratio between the number of applications and the number of educational places offered has thus tripled, going from around 4 in 2022 to 14 in 2023. This remarkable progression attests to the recovery of the sector and the considerable efforts made to adapt training to market requirements. The figures speak for themselves and reveal a growing enthusiasm among aspiring tourism professionals, attracted by promising opportunities and training in line with the current needs of the industry. Indeed, in order to respond to changes in tourist behavior on a global scale, several new sectors have been created in training institutes. Among the new disciplines offered are digital tourism, e-reputation, the promotion and marketing of local products, traditional Moroccan cuisine, business tourism and events, the design of ecotourism projects, Mediterranean gourmet cuisine and international and luxury hotels.

It should also be mentioned that the two specialized institutes of applied hotel and tourism technology in Tangier and Ouarzazate were rehabilitated as part of the Charaka program in collaboration with the Millennium Challenge Corporation. The facilities at both establishments were modernized, and new tools and innovative training programs were developed. The latter adopt a more participatory approach by actively involving tourism professionals in their management and governance. This new appetite for tourism professions is particularly welcome after the years marked by the Covid pandemic, which led to a migration of skills to other areas of activity, or even to other countries. This trend reinforces the determination of the Tourism Department to place skills development at the heart of its new roadmap, in close collaboration with the various stakeholders.
