8.9 million tourists visited Morocco at the end of October
A total of 8.9 million tourists visited Morocco during the first ten months of 2016, up 0.4% compared to the same period in 2015, according to the Tourism Observatory.
The number of foreign tourists (TES) decreased by 3.3%, while arrivals of Moroccans living abroad (MRE) recorded an increase of 4%, indicates the Tourism Observatory in a publication of statistics on tourism in Morocco from October 2016, citing data communicated by the General Directorate of National Security.
Tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom, Germany and France showed declines of 8%, 3% and 2% respectively, specifies the Observatory, noting that the number of tourists from Holland, Belgium and Spain increased by 2%.
Regarding total nights spent in classified tourist accommodation establishments, reports MAP, they increased by 2% compared to the end of September 2015 (-1.9% for non-resident tourists and +10.4% for residents), reports the same source.
The two tourist centers, Marrakech and Agadir alone generated 60% of total overnight stays during the first ten months of 2016, recording increases of 2%, notes the Observatory, adding that other destinations showed contrasting results.
Indeed, Fez recorded a decrease of 10%, while Casablanca and Tangier experienced increases of 5% and 6% respectively.
Concerning the occupancy rate until the end of October 2016, it fell by one point compared to the same period in 2015.
During the first ten months of 2016, revenues generated by the tourist activity of non-residents in Morocco amounted to 55.4 billion dirhams compared to 53.3 billion dirhams in 2015, an increase of +3.9%.
During the month of October 2016, the number of tourist arrivals at border crossings recorded an increase of 1.8% compared to that of 2015 (-1.2% for TES and +7.1% for MRE).
