After European airlines, it is the turn of Middle Eastern air carriers to take an interest in the skies of Marrakech. The Qatar Airways company has just inaugurated its flight linking the Moroccan tourist city to Doha. This new line opening reflects its desire to continue the development of its network in Morocco.
As a reminder, the Qatari company concluded a commercial partnership with RAM last year under which several advantages are offered to customers of both entities, including that of benefiting from a single plane ticket for the entire journey. The two companies thus offer 10 frequencies per week between Casablanca and Doha and an extension of the networks of the two operators towards Asia and Africa.
The possibility of an entry into the capital of RAM is still under study. In the meantime, the Qatari company has just set another milestone with the opening of its Marrakech-Doha line and by inaugurating the first long-haul line for the Kingdom’s first tourist city. The new line will open connectivity with more than 150 cities through Doha’s Hamad International Airport hub.
The choice of timing for the launch, namely the eve of the summer season, testifies to the essentially tourist aim of this airlift. Tourism professionals are delighted, who are campaigning for the development of air transport, particularly for long haul flights, in order to diversify the clientele, especially since the destination will also benefit from visibility in the Qatari carrier’s communication campaigns.
The Regional Tourism Council (CRT) of Marrakech, which has made this diversification a priority, targeting in particular the Bric countries, those of the Middle East and the American markets, is also negotiating similar partnerships with other airlines. Today, Marrakech Menara airport is served by more than 300 rotations/week.
These rotations are provided by around forty companies, departing from 58 airports. Thanks to the combined efforts of the CRT, the ONMT and the ONDA, the air supply has experienced strong growth over the last three years with around a hundred additional frequencies from the main European source markets. And in these times of crisis hitting European markets, local operators and at their head CRT and ONDA are going on the offensive.
Please note that Qatar Airways is the national airline of Qatar. It operates international flights on five continents from its main hub at Doha International Airport. It is considered one of the best airlines in the world. Qatar Airways is rated 5 stars by Skytrax, an independent organization, and was voted the best airline in the world in 2012 and 2015 (18 million voters) and 2nd in 2013 and 2014 as well as best business class for the second year in a row.
Founded in November 1993, the Qatari airline began flying the following year in 1994. It has been chaired since 1997 by Akbar Al Baker, its current CEO. From only 4 aircraft in 1997, it increased to 28 at the end of 2003, 50 in 2006 and to date operates more than 150 aircraft including its cargo fleet…
