Relaunch of tourism: Umih remains hungry

For the hotel union, the government’s responses to the tourism crisis remain insufficient.

The recovery plan presented by Manuel Valls is causing reactions. The Union of Hotel Trades and Industries (Umih) and the National Group of Hotel Chains (GNC) provided a more than mixed point of view. The two organizations, which represent hoteliers, especially regret « the lack of scope » of the announced plan.

« Measures relating to security such as one-off aid to our businesses are going in the right direction », explains a joint press release. However, the means allocated to promoting the France destination « are not commensurate with a sector which represents 7.5% of GDP and 2 million jobs », with a world number one ranking to be preserved.

A lack of resources

« It has been 2 months since 10 million euros were announced to us for the promotion of the France destination. We had the right to expect from an Interministerial Committee, which had not met for 13 years, a significant increase in this envelope commensurate with the budgets mobilized by our European competitors », regrets Roland Héguy, confederal president of the Umih.

Other sectors of the economy, industry and agriculture, have benefited from exceptional aid to help them get through major crises, it is added. Umih and GNC are therefore asking for increased resources to promote the destination. For the record, Prime Minister Manuel Valls presented, on November 7, a series of measures intended to revive the tourism sector, accompanied by a budget of 42.7 million euros.
