Assa-Zag: Sahrawi ecotourism vector of local development

Young people from the province have benefited from several training courses in the field

Initiated by the Akhzan Association for Development and Cooperation-Labouirat in partnership with the United Nations Development Program and the Ministry Delegate to the Minister of Energy, Mines, Water, and Environment, this workshop constituted the first stage of the partnership program relating to ecotourism and its role in mitigating and adapting the impacts of climate change in the province of Assa-Zag, and is part of the implementation implementation of the recommendations of the pre-COP organized last October 19 and 20 in Laâyoune on the preservation of Sahrawi ecological ecosystems and the objectives of the Conference of the Parties on climate (COP22). According to the organizers, the meeting aims to help promote ecotourism as a vector of sustainable development, and raise awareness of the province’s tourism potential, in order to attract new national and foreign investments.

For two days, experts, Moroccan and foreign academics and national and local socio-economic actors debated issues related to ecotourism, awareness of environmental and heritage protection, and the development of Saharan and adventure tourism. The meeting was an opportunity to focus on local climatic and natural specificities and environmental issues on a regional scale, to evaluate the efforts made in this area and to draw up perspectives for regional sustainable development.

The participants in this workshop recommended a series of recommendations linked in particular to the management and treatment of household, industrial and medical waste, the quantitative and qualitative monitoring of water resources, and the establishment of an environmental monitoring and surveillance system.

During this workshop, young people from the province of Assa-Zag benefited from several training courses in the fields of ecotourism and environmental education to enable them to reflect on the process to follow for the revitalization of these activities within these parks and protected areas in general.
