TOURISM: THE FIGURES ARE GREEN AT THE END OF APRIL 2019
The tourism sector is doing quite well. After the declines recorded at the end of March 2019, tourism is returning to growth. The sector’s figures are green at the end of April 2019. This is what emerges from the latest statistics on tourism just published by the Moroccan Tourism Observatory.
According to data communicated by the General Directorate of National Security, the number of tourist arrivals at border crossings during the month of April 2019 increased by 11.5% compared to that of 2018 (+9% for TES and +16% for MRE).
As for the main source markets, they recorded positive results, recording double-digit increases in particular Spain, Germany and Italy with strong increases of +29%, +22% and +24% respectively, followed by the United States and Belgium with +18% and +11%. France, the United Kingdom and Holland also recorded increases of 7%, 7% and 5% respectively.
Concerning total nights spent in classified tourist accommodation establishments, they recorded an increase of +9% in April 2019, compared to that of 2018 (+8% for non-resident tourists and +12% for residents).
At the geographical level, the destinations of Marrakech and Agadir recorded an increase in terms of overnight stays of +7% and +15% respectively.
Also, Fez and Essaouira experienced significant growth of +13% each. The other cities showed positive results: Tangier (+10%), Rabat (+6%) and Casablanca (+6%).
Thus during the first four months of 2019, the volume of arrivals at border posts increased by +6% compared to the same period in 2018 (+5.3% for TES and +7.8% for MRE).
The main source markets saw an increase in arrivals during this period, in particular, the United States (+14%) and Italy (+13%), followed by France
(+9%), Spain (+9%) and Germany (+8%). Other markets also showed growth: Holland (+7%), Belgium (+5%) and the United Kingdom (+4%).
Same trend in the evolution of overnight stays in EHTCs between January-April 2019, i.e. 6% compared to the same period of 2018.
