The IMF and the World Bank announce the holding of their annual general meetings in Marrakech from October 9 to 15
The two main global financial institutions expressed their unconditional support for the Kingdom of Morocco in this difficult period, following the devastating earthquake which struck the Al Haouz region and its surroundings, in the heart of the country, leading to the death of 3,000 people and causing more than 5,000 injuries. In a powerful gesture of solidarity with Morocco, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB) today announced their decision to move their annual general meetings to Marrakech. This imperial city was also affected by the earthquake of September 8, being located only 70 km from the locality of Ighil, the epicenter of the earthquakes. The annual general meetings will be held from October 9 to 15. This is the first time in 50 years that these Assemblies are being held on the African continent.
“At this very difficult time, we believe that the Annual Assemblies provide the opportunity for the international community to demonstrate its support for Morocco and its inhabitants, who are once again demonstrating resilience in the face of tragedy” following the earthquake that struck the Al Haouz region, we read in this statement from World Bank President Ajay Banga, Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, and the Minister of Economy and Finance Nadia Fettah Alaoui. “Since the devastating earthquake that occurred on September 8 in Morocco, the services of the World Bank and the IMF have carried out, in close coordination with the Moroccan authorities and a team of experts, an in-depth assessment of the capacity of Marrakech to host the 2023 Annual Meetings,” specifies the same source. This evaluation, it is indicated, mainly consisted of ensuring that the holding of these Assemblies “does not disrupt essential relief and reconstruction activities and that the safety of participants can be ensured”. “At the end of a careful examination of the conclusions, the management of the World Bank and the IMF agreed, in agreement with the Moroccan authorities, to maintain the organization of the Annual Meetings in Marrakech, while adapting the content of the event to the circumstances,” adds the same source. It should be noted that the Ministry of Economy and Finance organized, Tuesday in Marrakech, in partnership with the Court of Auditors, an international conference around the “Role of supreme audit institutions in strengthening accountability, transparency, public integrity and good governance”. This Conference takes place as part of a series of activities organized by Morocco on the occasion of the holding, in the Kingdom, of the Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund next October in Marrakech, indicate the two parties in a press release.
