Popularization of science in Darija: “Calendar of the Universe”, the newborn of Najib El Mokhtari
Creator of content known to Moroccan Internet users, Najib El Mokhtari continues his efforts in the popularization of science. This time, he is launching his “Calendar of the Universe”, a unique experience
It is a newborn who will consolidate scientific popularization efforts in Morocco. The famous young creator of online science content, Najib El Mokhtari, launched his new publication on the history of science on January 4, 2024. This is a calendar for the year 2024 like no other, since it will be embellished with texts and illustrations on a scientific theme, all written in the Moroccan dialect, Darija. « I chose Darija because this project is an emanation of people’s interactions when I published articles and videos on science in Darija on social networks. I noticed that it interested and made people react much more than when it is in Arabic », explains to Maroc Hebdo, Najib El Mokhtari. For him, it is also an opportunity to move away from virtual and digital media, and see the public’s reaction to content printed in Darija, particularly on scientific subjects. This “Calendar of the Universe” will be available on pages measuring 32x24cm, and each month will be associated with an article in Darija on a major event for humanity and for the development of science, starting with the first tools invented by Homo sapiens tens of thousands of years ago, up to the genesis of artificial intelligence today, including the Neolithic revolution or the industrial revolution. In addition to the events and national holidays found in the usual calendars, the Calendar of the Universe also indicates in advance and precisely the important dates of the Hijri calendar, in particular the start of the month of Ramadan and the Islamic holidays, based on science and astronomical calculation. “Officially, we will have to wait for confirmation from the public authorities, but it will always correspond 100%,” Najib El Mokhtari tells us. Added to this are the dates corresponding to astronomical events eagerly awaited by the most keen in 2024, such as eclipses and meteor showers. Scientific rigor And as in his videos and articles that he has published for ten years, the concern for scientific rigor is present in this calendar of the universe which is accompanied by comments from scientists and historians who have reviewed and verified its content. Anyone who has purchased the publication will receive a personal code which will allow them to access the calendar website and ask questions relating to the themes covered. Questions that Najib El Mokhtari will answer every month in a video with a scientist. The universe calendar will be available in two versions to order online on a dedicated site universecalendars.com. The standard edition costs 199 dirhams, while the special version, sold at 449 dirhams, will allow, among other things, exclusive access to articles in audio format with a sound environment, and priority in questions/answers.
