Morocco, pioneer of the energy transition for a sustainable future
The establishment of the national renewable energy strategy, within the evolving context of global development which characterizes Morocco, positions it as an example to emulate. This initiative has demonstrated its capacity and relevance by transforming the Kingdom into a major player in the production of renewable energy, affirms a recent study published by the Arab Democratic Center. Since 2009, Morocco has undertaken a bold transformation by developing an innovative national energy strategy, aiming not only to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also to meet its pressing energy needs in a context of exponentially increasing energy bills, underlined the authors of the study, Rachid Meftahi and Aissa El Bouzidi, published in the 27th edition of the Journal of Media Studies of the Arab Democratic Center. They recalled that this first phase was followed by the adoption of an energy efficiency strategy, marking a crucial step towards more rational and sustainable energy consumption. In 2017, Morocco reached a new milestone with the launch of its national sustainable development strategy. This strategy is based on solid foundations and clear directions, integrating innovative programs intended to increase the share of renewable energies to 42% in 2020, then to 52% by 2030. Accompanied by a national strategic approach for sustainable development, this initiative inaugurates a new era aimed at reducing environmental impact while promoting green and inclusive growth, the researchers specified. In addition, by striving to develop and diversify the energy mix, Morocco is banking on renewable energies and energy efficiency as pillars of its energy policy, while strengthening regional integration for increased resilience in the face of global challenges. Furthermore, the study noted that the reduction of Morocco’s energy dependence to 88% allowed the Kingdom to avoid the depletion of its financial resources and to preserve the environment, noting that future projects launched by Morocco will make it an exporter of clean electricity over the next decade. In addition, the successful implementation of the national renewable energy strategy in Morocco has made this country an exemplary model in the field. This strategy has demonstrated its effectiveness and relevance by transforming Morocco into a major producer of renewable energy. This transformation of energy challenges into investment opportunities has encouraged engagement in major development projects in this sector. As a result, Morocco has consolidated its position as a world leader in renewable energy, placing it on a new sustainable development trajectory, capable of achieving significant economic, social and environmental progress, bringing it closer to its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
