Women’s rights in Morocco: Major advances that continue to grow
The situation of Moroccan women has seen “major” progress which continues to grow, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI. The status of women, under the reign of HM King Mohammed VI, was marked by a gentle revolution, as part of a social and development dynamic, inspired by the Royal desire to reserve for Moroccan women the place they deserve for the building of a strong and developed Morocco. Since the accession of HM the King to the Throne, the Kingdom has accumulated significant achievements regarding the issue of women; The importance given to women’s rights constitutes a national priority, to be immunized against all forms of discrimination and exploitation. In this sense, the Sovereign adheres to this approach, as evidenced by the various royal speeches and the wise guidance of the Sovereign, with the objective of developing public policies and national programs consolidating the status of women within society, while granting capital importance to women in vulnerable situations, particularly in rural areas. This royal concern was illustrated by the adoption of the Moudawana in 2004, which highlights the Moroccan genius in the search for balanced, fair and practical solutions, within the framework of the institution of Imarat Al Mouminine. It reflects an enlightened and open jurisprudence, enshrining human and citizenship rights, for Moroccans, women and men, on an equal footing… The profound reforms that the Moudawana underwent at the time, constitute a gentle societal revolution, achieved thanks to Moroccan jurisprudence, which stood out within the framework of the Imarat Al Mouminine Institution. HM the King, and in order to preserve the rights acquired by Moroccan women, continues to highlight the shortcomings which hinder the achievement of the objectives of the Moudawana. Interaction with the Royal Appeal takes place through collective reflection, with a view to updating mechanisms and legislation relating to women and the family, to support developments and achievements in human and family rights. In terms of human rights achieved in favor of Moroccan women, under the High Royal Solicititude, the achievements are numerous. Indeed, a series of important decisions, notably the recognition of the right of a woman married to a foreigner to grant Moroccan nationality to her children, an important achievement long demanded by women’s associations and civil society actors in the Kingdom, and the Royal Directives in 2014 in favor of soulaliyate women aimed at breaking with previous laws and giving women their legal right to inherit on the same basis as men, in addition to opening the profession of Adoul to women in 2018… Furthermore, we must salute the efforts made by the Kingdom to honor its international commitments, by strengthening women’s rights and fighting against all forms of discrimination, while continuing a responsible commitment to the international women’s rights system; In this regard, Morocco is fully committed to the UN agenda “Women, Peace and Security”, through the launch of the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security in March 2022, in execution of Security Council Resolution 1325. As part of the Kingdom’s commitment to continuing its commitment to the UN system for the protection of women’s rights, the documents of accession to the two optional protocols relating to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, deposited on April 22, 2022, entered into force in July 2022. These distinguished achievements made by the Kingdom in favor of women were praised in 2022 by the UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, highlighting the progress made by Morocco in terms of women’s rights…
