DISCOVER MOROCCO
Kalaat Sraghna has been in the grip of increasing tension for several days following the open strike of garbage collectors, the latter protesting against the delay in payment of their salaries for almost four full months, a situation which illustrates the precariousness of management and the failure of the service delegation system to guarantee rights the most basic of employees
Entire families are squeezed by accumulating debt, water and electricity bills, and living and care costs, while workers find themselves trapped between need and dignity, faced with fading promises and an increasingly bleak reality
Workers’ anger erupted during a noisy march from the company’s headquarters to the provincial prefecture, a final attempt to challenge the Governor of the Province, Samir El Yazidi, in the hope of an intervention to restore the situation, after the patience of the workers had run out and the Municipal Council remained silent in the face of its obligations
According to testimonies of several demonstrators, the responses received from Council officials have been nothing but evasive sentences and promises that have lost all credibility, while the situation continues to deteriorate, associations, unions and human rights organizations have entered the scene, declaring their total solidarity with the workers
They hold the Executive Office of the Municipal Council directly responsible for the current social explosion and demand the opening of a serious and urgent dialogue, instead of settling for temporary and superficial solutions that do not address the root of the crisis
While voices are raised to demand a course correction, the Council maintains a silence which fuels doubts and fuels popular anger, especially with rumors coming from municipal services which report slow movements and obvious confusion in the search for solutions practices
Today, the city is on the brink of an abyss: uncleaned streets, unpaid workers, and residents who helplessly watch a situation that gets worse day by day. The Executive Office faces a difficult test: either take courageous decisions to stop the bleeding and restore confidence, or let the situation explode further, with consequences that no one will escape
