Maritime fishing: The Halieutis strategy reinforces Morocco’s leadership in the sector (Spanish newspaper)
The Halieutis strategy, initiated in 2009 under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, continues to bear fruit, thus consolidating Morocco’s positioning as a key player in the maritime fishing sector, writes the Spanish economic and financial news daily « El Economista ». Thanks to this strategic vision, “the country reached record production and export levels in 2024, confirming the competitiveness of its industry on the international market,” writes the newspaper. Morocco also stands out for its modern infrastructure, making it possible to process nearly 60% of coastal fishing catches and produce a wide range of processed products, including canned, semi-preserved, fresh packaged, frozen products, oils, cured meats and fish meal, adds the same source. With exports now sold in 138 international markets, the Moroccan fishing industry benefits from an efficient ecosystem promoting the valorization and transformation of seafood products, notes the publication. And note that the economic impact of this dynamic also translates into a strong contribution to employment, with more than 260,000 direct positions, particularly in artisanal fishing and aquaculture, booming sectors. In 2024, the marine aquaculture sector in Morocco recorded a production of 3,600 tonnes, generating a turnover of 310 million dirhams, as part of a strategy aimed at strengthening food security, creating new jobs and supporting the economic development of the sector, notes the author of the article. The Spanish economic media notes that the Halieutis strategy, which is based on three fundamental axes, the sustainability of resources, the valorization of sectors and the strengthening of competitiveness, constitutes an essential lever to make Morocco a major pole of the blue economy and a competitive player on international markets.
