Marrakech: the majority of hotels remain closed
At Marrakech, the sector of the hotel industry has been in dire straits during the summer season which is coming to an end. In question, the delay in the implementation of the program contract for tourism, the closure of Moroccan borders and the ban on travel to and from eight cities including the ocher city.
Professionals in the hotel sector may hope for the measures announced by the Minister of Tourism, Nadia Fettah Alaoui, but nothing has changed. She placed emphasis on preserving jobs (at least 80% of the workforce compared to February 2020) and the good health of company cash flow. “The measures capable of achieving these two objectives will be operational from this week,” she said in an interview with L’Économiste on August 11.
In Marrakech, only 39 hotels including Kenzi, Radisson, Rotana Golf and Sofitel have reopened their doors out of 450 with an occupancy rate of 10%. Conversely, large palaces such as the Royal Mansour, the Four Season, and the Mamounia (under full renovation) remained closed. The reason? Their mainly international clientele cannot come to Morocco due to the closure of the borders. Guest houses in the ocher city have also closed their doors due to the lack of customers and the ban on travel to and from Marrakech and seven other cities in the kingdom.
