Agadir: 700 million DH to establish the port as a regional development hub

A total investment of 700 million DH is dedicated to financing several projects at the Agadir port complex. Made by the National Ports Agency, these investments are intended for the creation of a multi-purpose terminal for an amount of 432 MDH, the planned terminal has a quay length of 462 ml (including the extension) at -10.5 draft and a land area of 13.1 hectares. It will be equipped with 5 low capacity cranes and will have 4 high capacity cranes and a cold storage space. The reinforcement of the main jetty of the commercial port for a cost of 110 MDH, the rehabilitation of the quays of the commercial port for an amount of 102 MDH and the rehabilitation of the platform of the port’s fishing triangle for an amount of 56 MDH.

These achievements are part of the national port strategy and will enable the Agadir port complex to ultimately respond to pressing port demand and the growing trend of the port’s various activities. The various planned projects were the focus of a visit recently made to the Agadir port complex by Abdel-kader Amara, Minister of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water, who visited the various sites of the port where explanations were presented to him on the progress and nature of the work in progress. Currently, the port of Agadir is versatile and handles traffic in citrus fruits and early fruits, cereals, minerals, various goods, deep-sea and coastal fishing as well as pleasure and containers.

The port is served directly by national road 8 and the highway which connects it to Marrakech and by national road 1 which connects it to Essaouira. According to the national port strategy, the latter can become a major port for cruise stopovers in the sub-region, in support of the national tourism development strategy. Given the capacities still available for commerce, these can be enhanced and optimized to serve a large regional hinterland. It will also see a move of its oil station to accommodate tankers of 60,000 DWT and two extensions of docks for containers and bulk goods. Fishing and its associated services, notably ship repair, benefit from a recomposition of spaces thanks to an exterior (central) extension. An outdoor cruise terminal will be built in the South-West near the marina and the tourist area. The new configuration of the port of Agadir will allow it to handle an annual global trade traffic of 16 MT by 2030.
