The beautiful gift from “Lonely Planet” for Meknè

“At the heart of the city, the Mausoleum of Ismail is a national treasure whose painstaking two-year restoration was completed in 2018, offering the traveler yet another reason to visit this underrated imperial city,” underlines the publication.

The travel guide looks back on the founding of Meknes in 1672 by Sultan Moulay Ismaïl who made it the capital of the Kingdom, bringing him the marble stones “to build the thick fortifications which still surround the city, immense underground warehouses and a superb Bab (gate) which even eclipses the Blue Gate of Fez”.

Meknes, illustrated in this guide by a photo showing a scene of the sun illuminating the golden pediment of Bab El Mansour, is part of the best of 2019.

“Lonely Planet experts have combed the entire planet in search of destinations that absolutely must not be missed in the months to come,” maintains the same source.

In this ranking of the 10 best destinations, Copenhagen came first, followed by Shenzhen (China), Novi Sad (Serbia), Miami (USA), and the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu.

Mexico City, Dakar, Seattle, Zadar (Croatia) and Meknes complete the Top 10.
