World Bank: for 2024, a record number of financing expected for Morocco
During the first half of this fiscal year 2024 (from July to December 2023), the World Bank has already approved three major financings totaling $1.15 billion for the Kingdom in support of the water, higher education and human capital sectors. A press review from Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb.
The World Bank closes the first half (July to December 2023) of the 2024 fiscal year with cumulative financing of $1.15 billion in favor of Morocco. During this period, the World Bank approved three major financing for the Kingdom in support of the water, higher education and human capital sectors, indicates Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb on Tuesday, January 2, 2023. The first loan, approved on July 18, concerns $350 million to support the government in the implementation of its National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program (PNAEPI, 2020-2027), in the context of the National Water Plan designed over 30 years (PNE, 2020-2050). In addition to supporting the PNE, the program will contribute to strengthening the governance of the water sector and improving the financial viability and efficiency of its use. In addition, it aims to improve an environment favorable to desalination and the reuse of treated water, two almost essential solutions for increasing the Kingdom’s water resources. “The second loan was validated on December 14 for $300 million intended to support the government in the implementation of the National Plan to accelerate the transformation of the ecosystem of higher education, scientific research and innovation,” recalls the daily. The program will advance a series of innovative and transformative approaches with a view to increasing the impact of higher education and scientific research, for the benefit of Moroccans, in the context of the new development model. As for the third loan, it will mobilize funding of $500 million to support ambitious social protection and health reforms. Approved on December 19, 2023, this loan is intended to improve the protection of the most vulnerable populations against health and climate risks, expand the social protection system and strengthen resilience to catastrophic events. It thus supports the implementation of the direct social assistance program. During the previous fiscal year (July 2022-June 2023), the World Bank granted Morocco a record budget, amounting to 1.85 billion dollars, thus exceeding the amount of 1.83 billion granted a year earlier.
