Morocco counts on the support of Côte d’Ivoire for its reintegration into the African Union
Abidjan (© 2017 Afriquinfos) –Morocco continues its lobbying for reintegration into the African Union. A few days before the summit of AU heads of state, the Kingdom carried out a new seduction operation in Côte d’Ivoire.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Morocco, Salaheddine Mezouar has been traveling to Abidjan for several days. On Monday January 23, he met Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara. During their meeting, the two men mainly discussed the readmission of Morocco into the African Union, an organization that the Kingdom had deserted in 1984 to contest the entry of the Sarawish Republic. Now, Morocco claims to have completed all the procedures as provided for by the constitutive act of the AU to pretext its eligibility.
In Abidjan, Mr. Salaheddine Mezouar did not procrastinate on the purpose of his visit. Its country, Morocco, intends to obtain the support of Côte d’Ivoire during the vote of heads of state which will decide whether or not Morocco can regain the pan-African organization, during the summit of heads of state in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on January 30 and 31, 2017.
Then to once again recall Morocco’s ambition for Africa which, according to him, is to work for its unity as well as for its prosperity, its growth and its solidarity, with the aim of helping the continent to regain its rightful place in the concert of nations.
Since the official announcement of its intention to regain the African Union, Morocco has stepped up its offensives to garner as much support as possible. Among them, a tour by King Mohamed VI in East Africa and recently, an attempt at mediation in the Gambian crisis.
The Kingdom thus offered asylum to the former Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh, then ordered by ECOWAS to cede power to his successor Adama Barrow, whose victory he refused to recognize.
