Morocco: the upturn in tourism benefits the hotel industry little

While many tourists arrived in Morocco this summer, the hotel industry benefited little from the upturn in tourism. Pre-Covid-19 crisis performance has not been achieved.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, Morocco welcomed a total of 3.2 million tourists during the months of June and July 2022, including 65% in July with more than 2 million arrivals. “This is an exceptional performance having made it possible to recover 100% of arrivals in June and July 2019,” he announced in a press release. Overnight stays amounted to 3.8 million for the same period, or 1.18 nights per tourist on average (including MRE), reports the daily Les Inspirations Eco.

Compared to 2019 statistics, the hotel industry has not yet returned to its level before the Covid-19 pandemic. In all, 2,003,919 nights were recorded in classified accommodation establishments (EHTC) in June 2019 for 1,092,430 arrivals at border posts, i.e. an average of 1.83 nights per tourist, 2,505,290 nights in July in EHTCs for 2,144,524 arrivals at border posts, i.e. an average of 1.16 nights per tourist. tourist and 3,020,545 nights in August in EHTCs for 1,722,081 arrivals at border posts, an average of 1.75 nights per tourist.
