Morocco is capable of organizing the 2026 World Cup, according to CAF president
Morocco is capable of organizing the 2026 World Cup, said the new president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Ahmad Ahmad, on Tuesday in Marrakech.
“The Kingdom of Morocco is capable of organizing this global football competition,” noted the president of CAF, during a press conference, organized on the sidelines of his courtesy and fraternity visit to Morocco, at the invitation of the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Faouzi Lakjaa.
In this context, the new president of CAF specified that it is now the 211 federations affiliated to the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) which are authorized to vote on the country organizing the World Cup.
Mr. Ahmad also indicated that the establishment of good governance and financial transparency will be his two priorities as new president of CAF.
He also welcomed the return of Morocco to the African Union, welcoming the expertise accumulated by Mr. Lakjaa in the financial field, something which could be beneficial for CAF.
The official also announced that from this year CAF will allocate 100 million dollars to each African federation, or 50 percent of FIFA’s annual allocation to CAF.
Concerning the issue of broadcast rights for African competitions, Mr. Ahmad indicated that this subject will be the subject of in-depth discussions with sponsors and broadcast rights holders.
“We must know how to reconcile the interest of African spectators and that of sponsors and broadcast rights holders,” he said, noting that the continent is blessed with great footballing talents, deploring, however, the lack of training infrastructure.
This conference was held in the presence of members of the CAF executive board, including Mr. Lakjaa, and members of the FIFA Council.
The new president of the Confederation of African Football, Mr. Ahmad Ahmad, was elected on March 16 in the first round for four years at the head of the African body, during its 39th Ordinary General Assembly which was held in Addis Ababa. He obtained 34 votes against 20 for his opponent, the outgoing president, Issa Hayatou, in office since 1988.
