Bankruptcy Thomas Cook: The impact in Morocco
The shock wave will be of high intensity in Morocco. The bankruptcy of the legendary tour operator Thomas Cook has resonated with many tour operators and hoteliers.
According to our information, and pending a more exhaustive assessment, it is mainly Agadir and Marrakech which will suffer the most from this global crisis. Professionals we contacted estimate that 60 to 80 hotels would be affected, particularly those marketing All-inclusive offers.
Referring to the Thomas Cook Morocco website, the « victims » would be more numerous given that Marrakech alone has 90 global TO customers. In Agadir, there are around forty. Likewise, the country’s main travel agencies are affected.
An upheaval which mobilized the entire profession and supervision. As we went online, a crisis meeting was being held under the chairmanship of Abdellatif Kabbaj, president of the National Tourism Confederation and also CEO of the Kenzi Hotels group.
The impact of the collapse of Thomas Cook is all the more severe as it does not stop only at the British source market. The French market is also affected.
As a reminder, Morocco received some 683,000 British tourists in 2018, totaling 2.14 million overnight stays.
