Marrakech-Safi. Tourism: the region focuses on ecology
National tourist activity is picking up with the easing of health measures and the reopening of borders. The Marrakech-Safi region adapts its offer to the new demands of tourists, now fond of holidays as close as possible to nature.
The Marrakech-Safi region is the leading national tourist destination. At the end of June 2019, the region recorded more than 5.4 million tourists, with more than 11.46 million overnight stays in the same period. Knowing that the tourism sector is by far one of the most affected sectors in the world, the year 2020 was not easy as activity suffered a dizzying decline. Today, national tourism activity is taking a breather with the easing of health measures and the reopening of borders. The Marrakech-Safi region is thus preparing for the resumption of tourist activity for the summer season. In fact, despite the economic crisis facing the tourism sector, the structural fundamentals of the travel industry in the region remain excellent.
Focus on ecotourism
Preparing Marrakech-Safi so that it offers integrated ecotourism offers is the ambition of the region, materialized by a first pilot action with the creation of the eco-Village concept in Sidi Kaouki oriented towards sustainability, well-being and responsible tourism. A call for projects is in progress until July 21, 2021. A positioning that appears to be a natural choice and an orientation that makes sense for the region. With 17 tourism projects validated by the Unified Regional Investment Commission (CRUI) for a projected investment amount of MAD 2.3 billion in the midst of a pandemic, a wind of hope and optimism is blowing through the tourism sector. And ecotourism is not left out. Presented by Yassine Mseffer, general director of the Regional Investment Center-MS, during the CRI Meeting Days, this accelerating trend already has some great developments of which it can be proud. The projects, in the mountains, in the Agafay desert or on the coast, are all examples to celebrate. Note in this sense that Marrakech-Safi will see the realization of several structuring projects which will transform the region and strengthen its attractiveness (play and leisure parks, conference centers and exhibition centers, the high-speed line, etc.). The region has the largest number of environmental labels, ecotourism is likely to promote equitable territorial development for better inclusion of local communities.
