Increase in the number of tourist arrivals in the first half of the year
The number of tourists who visited Morocco during the first half of 2019 reached more than 5.4 million compared to 5 million in the same period of 2018, according to figures recently published by the Tourism Observatory.
“During the first six months of 2019, the volume of arrivals at border posts increased by +6.6% compared to the same period in 2018,” indicated the Observatory, specifying that the number of foreigners (TES) increased by +6.2% while that of Moroccans residing abroad increased by +7.1%.
Statistical data shows that all major source markets posted significant increases during this period. Namely: Italy (+12%), France (+9%), Spain (+8%), Germany (+8%), Holland (+7%), Belgium (+6%) and the United Kingdom (+6%).
Note that nights in classified tourist accommodation establishments (EHTC) also experienced an evolution during this same period
period.
Indeed, at the end of June 2019, total nights spent in classified tourist accommodation establishments recorded an increase of +5% compared to the same period of 2018 (+4.3% for non-resident tourists and +8.5% for residents).
According to the Observatory, “the two tourist centers Marrakech and Agadir alone generated 58% of total overnight stays at the end of June 2019. These two destinations recorded positive results (+8% for Marrakech and +4% for Agadir)”, we can read in a press release.
The same source notes that Tangier and Fez also posted good performances (+11% and +4% respectively).
Regarding the month of last June, data communicated by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) show an increase in the number of tourist arrivals at border posts of +15% compared to that of 2018.
It appears that during the month of June, the number of arrivals of foreign tourists at border crossings increased by +14.5% while that of Moroccans living abroad increased by +15.3%.
From the data analyzed, it appears that the main source markets recorded double-digit increases, like France (17%), Spain and Germany (14%), Italy (16%) as well as Belgium and Holland (15%).
At the end of June, overnight stays in classified tourist accommodation establishments also recorded a performance. Since, according to data communicated by tourist accommodation professionals, the volume of nights in classified establishments saw a parallel increase of +25% in June 2019, compared to the same month of 2018.
In this area, let us specify that the increase in overnight stays in EHTCs was +16% for non-resident tourists and +51% for residents.
In its note, the Observatory indicated that « at the geographical level, the destinations of Marrakech and Agadir recorded an increase in terms of overnight stays of +29% and +15% respectively », stressing that Tangier, Casablanca and Fez also experienced significant increases of +41%, +30% and +21% respectively.
