TGV in Morocco: The development of high-speed trains
The TGV, advanced technology The TGV line in Morocco Tangier-Kénitra is a Moroccan high-speed line which measures 186 kilometers. It was in November 2018 that the inauguration took place. TGV Duplex technology equips the line, which allows a speed of 320 km/h. Trains can carry up to 533 passengers. ERTMS level 2 signaling technology equips the LGV. This allows for better safety and better regulation of rail traffic. The Tangier-Kénitra LGV is the first high-speed line in Africa. Franco-Moroccan cooperation enabled the construction of this line. The construction of the line required an investment of 22.9 billion dirhams (around 2.1 billion euros). A reduction in time by more than half for the journey between Tangier and Kenitra. The journey goes from 4 hours to just 1 hour and 20 minutes. Wi-Fi is also available on trains to allow passengers to stay connected during their journey. This project is the first stage of a larger project aimed at creating a high-speed rail network in Morocco. The project plans to build more than 1,500 kilometers of high-speed lines by 2040. It aims to connect the country’s main cities. This network will reduce travel times and improve connectivity. It will also help stimulate economic development throughout the country. Morocco now wants to expand its high-speed rail network by adding two new lines. The first line will connect Casablanca to Marrakech, with a total distance of 200 km. This line will significantly reduce travel time between the two cities. It will go from 3 hours and 15 minutes to just 1 hour and 20 minutes. The second line will connect Tangier to Agadir, with a total distance of 700 km. A considerable reduction in travel time, from 10 hours to just 3 hours. The construction project for the two new TGV lines is underway. Development work has already started for the Casablanca – Marrakech line. They should be completed by 2025. For the Tangier-Agadir line, feasibility studies are underway and work should begin in 2024. In addition, the Moroccan TGV, also known as Al Boraq, is a “premium” offer from the National Railway Office (ONCF). Modern and comfortable cars equip the train. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, electrical outlets, and individual entertainment screens. In fact, CO2 emissions are reduced compared to other modes of transport. The development of the Moroccan TGV is one of the main development projects in the railway sector in Morocco. Projects for the construction of new lines are being studied by the ONCF. Studies on the modernization of stations and the purchase of new trains are also planned. These projects aim to improve the accessibility and quality of rail transport services in Morocco.
