Here is the reason for the Mauritanian president’s visit to Morocco
Mariem Mint Dah, the wife of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, has confirmed that her health is improving after undergoing surgery at the Rabat military hospital. In a statement issued by the presidential press office, the dental surgeon expressed her gratitude to all those who sympathized with her and sent her wishes for recovery. She assured that “all these prayers and sincere feelings deeply touched his heart and had a very positive impact on his morale”. The First Lady of Mauritania also expressed her gratitude to those who sent her festive wishes or supported her during this period of convalescence, stressing that the kind feelings of citizens and their comforting words were a source of strength for her. Mariem Mint Dah thanked God Almighty “for giving us these moments to express our love and solidarity,” and assured everyone that she is on the road to full recovery. Doctor Mariem Mint Dah underwent the surgical operation at the Rabat military hospital, while President Ould Ghazouani left Nouakchott on Wednesday evening to travel to Morocco to visit her and closely monitor her state of health. According to several sources, the Mauritanian president could meet King Mohammed VI this Friday in Casablanca while relations between the two countries are going through a zone of turbulence after the visit of Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune to Mauritania, Monday, December 9.
A visit which is part, according to the Algerian information site El-djazair El-djadida (new Algeria, Editor’s note), « as part of the strengthening of the recently established Maghreb axis, which aims to isolate the Moroccan Makhzen regime in response to its role in the suffocation of the Arab Maghreb Union and the introduction of the usurping entity [Israel] into the region, with the sole aim of destabilizing it. The Algerian regime, which continues its policy of encircling Morocco through the creation of a Maghreb union without Morocco as part of its growing rivalry towards the kingdom, seeks to push Mauritania to play a role in this sense. This visit by Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who holds the rotating presidency of the African Union, could, in this perspective, aim to reassure Morocco as to the neutrality of its southern neighbor.
