Trump introduces reciprocal customs duties, Morocco relatively spared
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday establishing new reciprocal customs duties on imports from around the world. The new customs tariffs vary depending on the country. Trump imposed 10% customs duties on Morocco, the lowest rate among those he announced.
Morocco is among the least impacted nations, with a 10% rate applied to its exports to the United States, along with other trading partners such as Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and Turkey. On the other hand, higher duties have been imposed on other countries, notably 30% for Algeria and 28% for Tunisia. The European Union and China are also affected, with respective taxes of 20% and 34% on their exports to the American market.
Morocco and the United States have been linked by a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) since 2006, which has helped to boost their trade. At the end of 2022, Moroccan shipments to the United States reached 16.3 billion dirhams ($1.67 billion), led by mineral or chemical fertilizers (3.35 billion dirhams, or 20.8% of exports) and the automobile industry (11.4% of the total). The general tax of 10% will come into force on April 5 at 04:01 GMT and increased customs duties on April 9.
