Tangier Conference: Strengthening the historical and legal legitimacy of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara
HAYAT SEMLALI
The National Organization of Translators of Morocco organized in Tangier a scientific conference entitled « The history of the Moroccan Sahara, from the era of the Almoravids to our days », in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Communication. This meeting served as a platform to highlight the deeply rooted historical, spiritual and political ties that have united Moroccan monarchs with Saharan territories since the time of the Almoravids (Amazigh Sanhajis).
The speakers unanimously affirmed that the Sahara is an integral part of Morocco’s institutional identity, established by ties of allegiance (Beia) and cultural and religious affiliation. This conference was of particular importance because it coincided with the historic vote by the UN Security Council on Resolution 2797, which adopted the autonomy proposal as a framework for the political settlement of the artificial conflict.
The participants stressed that this resolution is the crowning achievement of Morocco’s diplomatic efforts under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, and that it definitively confirms the historical and legal legitimacy of the national cause. The interventions also highlighted the unifying role of the Moroccan Sahara in the Middle Ages through its economic and political links, reaffirming the symbolism of the Green March as a « pivotal step » for the completion of territorial integrity.
