New terminal for Marrakech airport
A new terminal at Marrakech airport, a flagship tourism destination in Morocco, was inaugurated on Wednesday and will increase its capacity to 9 million passengers instead of the current 3 million, reported the Moroccan agency MAP.
Inaugurated by King Mohammed VI, this terminal cost 1.22 billion dirhams (€115 million).
The work should have been completed in 2014.
The number of passengers passing through this airport increased from 3.2 million in 2012 to 3.9 million in 2015, according to official figures.
With nearly 20% of the total national air movement, it is the second airport in the country behind that of Casablanca.
Some 8.9 million tourists visited Morocco during the first ten months of 2016, up 0.4% compared to the same period in 2015, according to the Moroccan Tourism Observatory.
The kingdom’s two main tourist hubs remain Marrakech and Agadir, two southern cities which received 60% of total overnight stays over the first ten months of 2016, each up 2%.
The line linking Marrakech to Paris-Orly airport is at the top of the airline lines operated in Morocco, with a share of almost 3% of air traffic in all Moroccan airports, according to the National Airports Office (ONDA).
In March 2017, Air France should open a new connection between Paris-Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport (CDG) and Marrakech, the Air info site reported on Wednesday.
