The Marrakech circuit becomes permanent
Work has started on the Moulay El Hassan circuit in Marrakech, Morocco, in order to make the track permanent, and no longer share part of its layout with traffic during the rest of the year as is currently the case. This statement comes from Jalil Nekmouche, the president of the Moroccan motor sports federation, during a discussion with Jean Todt, the president of the FIA, on the occasion of the last Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix in Monza.
The pit lane, garages and the entire paddock will be moved inside the circuit in order to close it to the public. The project must be completed by the 2015 WTCC round in Marrakech. “The goal is to be ready for next year with the new structures, in time to host the WTCC. The track layout will not be changed but the circuit will become permanent. This decision was taken to develop local races in the “Red City” by making organization easier.
The Marrakech circuit hosted the first event of the 2014 WTCC season, the first round of which was won by Argentinian driver José Maria Lopez (Citroën), and the second by his teammate, the nine-time world rally champion, Sébastien Loeb. Present on the calendar since 2009, the Marrakech race was the first international event organized in Morocco since 1958 and the Casablanca F1 Grand Prix won by Stirling Moss.
