The Moroccan government reviews its support for Moroccans living abroad

On the occasion of the 49th anniversary of the Green March, Mohammed VI stressed in his speech the need to review the situation of the Moroccan diaspora living abroad. The monarch conveyed to the government the need to improve and speed up procedures for expatriate citizens. These considerations will be addressed in accordance with the instructions set out in the speech.

Following this speech, Aziz Akhannouch, head of government, brought together his team of ministers to develop a common plan to allow Moroccans living abroad to improve their relations with the country. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Abdelouafi Laftit, Minister of the Interior, and Nadia Fettah, Minister of Economy and Finance, were notably present at this meeting.

“I have decided to review all the mechanisms used for the management of Moroccans residing abroad,” declared Mohammed VI in his speech commemorating the 49th anniversary of the Green March. According to the press release published by the department of the head of government, the first changes will be the restructuring of the Council of the Community of Moroccans residing abroad and the creation of the Mohammedia Foundation for Moroccans residing abroad. In addition, initiatives were discussed and debated which will solely aim to unite and improve the link between MREs and Morocco. Through “culture and love of the homeland”, as mentioned in the press release, the government is seeking approval by the Chamber of measures aimed at supporting the simplification of administrative procedures, through digitalization.

In his speech, the Alawite monarch described this foundation as “a new public agency responsible for the preparation, coordination and implementation of the National Strategy for Moroccans residing abroad”. Another idea put forward during the government meeting is that of not leaving youth, and therefore new talents, behind. To do this, work is underway to increase and improve the country’s educational institutions, which have developed significantly in recent years.
