Morocco: 9% increase in tourist arrivals at the end of May 2018

A total of 4.1 million tourists visited Morocco between January and May 2018, an increase of 9% compared to the same period a year earlier, according to the Tourism Observatory.

The number of foreign tourists (TES) increased by 15%, while the arrivals of Moroccans living abroad (MRE) decreased by 1%, indicates the Tourism Observatory which has just published its statistics on Moroccan tourism for the month of May 2018.

This increase concerned the main emitting markets, in particular Italy (16%), Germany (+12%), France and Holland (8% each), the United Kingdom (7%) and Spain (4%), notes the Observatory.

Concerning the total nights recorded in classified tourist accommodation establishments, they experienced an increase of 7% during the first 5 months of 2018 (+11% for non-resident tourists and -2% for residents).

The two tourist centers Marrakech and Agadir alone generated 60% of total overnight stays at the end of May, reports the Observatory, which notes that these two cities experienced an increase of 9% and 7%, respectively.

Other destinations also showed good performances, in particular the cities of Fez, Rabat and Tangier with respective increases of 17%, 8% and 7%.

Moreover, revenues generated by the tourist activity of non-residents in Morocco amounted to 27.1 billion dirhams (billion dirhams) at the end of May, compared to 23.6 billion dirhams a year ago, an increase of 14.8%.

During the month of May, the number of tourist arrivals at border posts recorded a decrease of 3% compared to the same month of 2017 (1% for TES and -9% for MRE), adds the Observatory.
