Morocco: Golden Star of the Marrakech Festival for “The Attack” by Lebanese filmmaker Ziad Doueiri

The Golden Star (Grand Prize) of the 12th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival (FIFM) was awarded Saturday evening to the film “The Attack” by Lebanese Ziad Doueiri.
The film, scheduled for release in 2013, tells the story of Dr. Amin Jâafari (Ali Suliman), a surgeon of Palestinian origin called to the scene of a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv. When he arrived, he discovered his wife among the victims and learned from the police that she was the suicide bomber.
Dr Jâafari initially rejects the accusation but he gradually feels overcome by doubt…
The jury prize, for its part, was won ex aequo by the Iranian films “Taboor” by Vahid Vakilifar and the Danish films “A hijacking” by Tobias Lindholm.
The 12 edition of FIFM (from November 30 to December 8) this year paid a “special tribute” to Indian cinema, very popular in Morocco.
In addition to “The Attack”, 14 feature films were in competition, including “Touch of the Light” (by Taiwanese director Chang Jung-Chi), presented as an opening film, “Fishing Days” in Patagonia by Argentinian Carlos Sorin and “Comme un lion”, by Frenchman Samuel Collardey.
Chaired by the British director John Boorman, the jury is made up, in particular, of the Canadian Marie-Josée Croze, the American James Gray, the Moroccan Jillali Ferhati and the Frenchman Lambert Wilson.
The FIFM opened Friday, November 30 with a standing ovation from the Moroccan public to French actress Isabelle Huppert, and a vibrant tribute was paid the next day to Shah Rukh Khan, the legend of Indian cinema, on the famous Jamâa El Fna square, a Mecca for Moroccan tourism.
Egyptian and Indian films are the most watched in Morocco, notably via the numerous satellite channels which broadcast them on a loop, followed by American films.
