Morocco: summer holidays very compromised
With the ban on travel between several cities, many Moroccans are afraid of traveling. To the great dismay of tourist operators.
Year after year, some 500,000 Moroccans spend their vacations in Spain each year. Others set their sights on other destinations such as France or Turkey. But not this summer, the Moroccan borders still being closed. The solution? Internal tourism.
Except that this alternative is just as complicated, the authorities having restricted access to several cities, including Marrakech, the tourist capital of the kingdom, as well as Tangier and Tetouan, two very popular destinations in summer.
“This disrupts the plan for resuming tourism, particularly internal tourism, expected and even promised by the State, and disconcerts national vacationers, but the State has chosen zero risk even though it does not exist. The outbreak of numerous clusters, the advent of Eid Al Adha, an unmissable annual religious and social event, precipitated these decisions,” comments Samir Kheldouni Sahraoui, head of the Chorus Consulting Hospitality & Leisure firm, also former director of the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT).
