Tourism: The UN adopts a draft resolution presented by Morocco
The Second Committee responsible for economic and financial issues of the UN General Assembly adopted, Wednesday, November 21, 2018 by consensus, a draft resolution presented by Morocco on “The promotion of sustainable tourism, including ecotourism, for the elimination of poverty and the protection of the environment.”
This biannual resolution supports the efforts of the Secretary General of the United Nations and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) by highlighting the central place of ecotourism in the fight against poverty, the protection of the environment and the promotion of sustainable development for all.
Presented in the plenary session of the Second Committee by Ambassador Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN, the resolution was adopted by consensus and co-sponsored by 95 member states belonging to different regional groups.
Morocco took this opportunity to shed light on several recommendations of the Secretary-General’s report on ecotourism and on the concrete initiatives of countries that have fully contributed to this process, especially in an African context.
The resolution also sheds light on the first African Charter for Responsible Tourism, adopted at the meeting of African tourism ministers on November 10, 2016, on the sidelines of the twenty-second session of COP22 in Marrakech. This document indicates, in fact, the way forward to apply the principles of sustainability and responsibility in the tourism sector in Africa.
