Tourism: how the supervisory body tries to save closed hotels

The Ministry of Tourism, Crafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy is rolling out a plan for the reopening of closed hotels in different cities in the Kingdom. The details have just been revealed by Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor. This article is a press review taken from the daily newspaper Today Morocco.

New life for closed hotels in the Kingdom’s cities. Work is currently being carried out to reopen these establishments, indicates the daily newspaper Today Morocco in its edition of Thursday January 18. “There are currently a number of closed hotels and we are working to reopen them,” explained Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, Crafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy, as part of her response to an oral question in Parliament. “We started with the cities of Agadir and Ouarzazate, due to the high percentage of closed hotels. We are going to extend these measures to other regions,” added the minister, explaining that the current work is focused on 3 fundamental axes. The first axis concerns support in order to attract investors with expertise and know-how to invest in these hotels. In this context, the sale operations of these hotels have begun through the launch of calls for tenders or direct contacts with investors. In the city of Agadir, 13 institutions have made contact with investors while in Ouarzazate, ten institutions have already made contact with investors. Contracts have also been concluded with renowned international investors to restructure and open these hotels, including ABS, TUI, Pickalbatros. The second axis relates to the involvement of the Mohammed VI Fund for Investment which is preparing to formalize its thematic funds in tourism. The third axis, reports the daily, concerns the new investment charter which provides significant incentives to investors. “This operation is of great importance, due to the major events that will be organized in the future in our country, namely the African Cup of Nations in 2025 and the World Cup in 2030,” said Ammor while recalling the measures taken in favor of hotels within the framework of the emergency plan, in particular through support amounting to 1 billion dirhams to relaunch the activity of hotel establishments after the Covid-19 pandemic in the best conditions. Through this operation, specifies Morocco Today, Morocco wants to consolidate the current dynamics of tourism. “The figures obtained in this sector confirm that the government took the appropriate decisions at the right time. During the first 11 months of 2023, we reached 13.2 million tourists and we will end the year with more than 14 million tourists, which represents an increase of more than one million tourists compared to the year 2019,” the minister said. “Regarding foreign exchange earnings, we will exceed 100 billion dirhams, which constitutes a record. Our country has also made significant progress in the World Tourism Organization ranking, moving from 34th place in 2019 to 22nd in 2022,” we read.
