Spotlight – Overpriced hotels in Morocco are pushing people away from domestic tourism

It’s a fact: hotels in Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Thailand and even Bali cost much less than in Morocco. As every summer, the debate on the prices of reservations and services in hotels in Morocco resurfaces. This year, this debate was fueled by the publication by Internet users on social networks of a “heavy” bill for drinks consumed in a hotel in Agadir, where a bottle of mineral water was paid 100 dirhams.

The exchanged invoice was widely commented on by Internet users, some of whom considered that it proves « the greed of the owners of hotels and other tourist establishments in Morocco », while others described these criticisms as exaggerated, believing that large hotels all over the world charge high prices.

Many Internet users denounced the “greed of tourism operators”, according to the Arabic-speaking site Hespress, while others advised their friends to spend holidays outside Morocco, particularly in the south of Spain, considering that the lower prices affordable for small budgets.

Yassine Kasabri, one of the young people convinced that vacations abroad, and more precisely in Europe, cost less than in Morocco, told Hespress: “If we compare prices in terms of quality of services, yes, Europe is cheaper. »

Yassine admits that not all European cities are cheap and vacations are not affordable, but he remains convinced that « Europe is generally cheaper than Morocco if we compare the quality of services provided to hotel and restaurant guests with those in our country. »

Other commentators also estimated that vacations outside Morocco cost less with the addition of quality services, as proof, according to them, of the growing number of Moroccans who go abroad to spend their vacations there.

In this context, Fatima wrote: “Last year I spent the holidays in Turkey, a million Moroccan cents allowed me to live like a princess. I wandered up and down for ten days during which I lived in unparalleled extravagance and in very, very luxurious restaurants, while in the south of Spain, on La Costa d’El Sol, it’s even cheap. »
