The project to build a tunnel between Spain and Morocco resurfaces
Things are becoming clearer for the project to build a tunnel linking Spain and Morocco under the Strait of Gibraltar. Exchanges have taken place between the parties in recent months.
Under study since 1979, the project to build the tunnel between Spain and the Kingdom of Morocco is resurfacing. At the time, both countries had created public companies, SNED and SECEGSA respectively.
Those responsible for the latter have met political and social representatives of Gibraltar in recent months as part of this project. This is what Hortidaily reports.
During the last meeting between Pablo Diaz, head of the SECEGSA socio-economic development zone, the mayor of San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix and other project stakeholders, the first clarified that the construction of the tunnel between Spain and the Kingdom of Morocco could indeed start in the coming decades.
The study of the project is progressing well. Construction work is likely to start in the 2030s or 2040s.
The results of studies carried out for more than 40 years by SECEGSA concern the construction of a 38.67 kilometer tunnel which will connect the two banks of the strait between Punta Paloma, in Tarifa, and Punta Malabata, near Tangier.
According to the characteristics of the underwater section of the tunnel, the length would be 27.75 kilometers, the maximum depth would be 475 meters and a slope of 3%.
The same source also underlines that the agreements signed between the United Kingdom and Morocco after Brexit to improve the conditions of imports into British territory could contribute to the realization of this project.
