Tourism: Morocco wants to catch up with pre-Covid figures
Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, Crafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy, displays her optimism with a view to reaching the pre-pandemic level of the sector at the end of March. The government is carrying out several actions through the emergency plan amounting to 2 billion dirhams to be able to meet this challenge.
“We are confident that the recovery will happen quickly, whether in Marrakech or in other cities in the kingdom. Indeed, as soon as the borders reopened on February 7, a good number of foreign companies resumed their programming in Morocco, unveiling interesting programs with gradual resumptions of their programming in the Kingdom. At the end of March, we will have reached the capacity of 2019, which is a very good performance,” said the minister in an interview with Challenge.
She recalled that at the same time, the ONMT teams began a tour in strategic markets, to meet the main travel prescribers, in particular Morocco’s airline partners and that this tour was crowned by the announcement of leading airlines in the destination of record increases from the summer of 2022. « For example, Ryanair will exceed the capacity of the same period by 50% in 2019 (pre-pandemic reference year) and Transavia and Easyjet announce significant increases, of around 40% and 11% respectively,” she added.
What about other actions carried out to revive the tourism sector? “In parallel with the commercial and partnership aspects, the ONMT has mobilized on another strategic axis of the recovery which is the promotion of the image of the Morocco destination, by deploying two simultaneous communication campaigns for national and international tourism. A studied and well-targeted speech to, on the one hand, win back international tourists and on the other hand continue to make Moroccans here and elsewhere want to discover or rediscover the riches of their country,” said Fatim-Zahra Ammor.
Morocco is preparing to regain its market shares. “We believe that several issues are major at this stage to quickly regain our market shares and it is obvious that the financial issue is essential to allow the various tourism departments, including the ONMT, to fight their battle on several fronts (commercial, communication, partnerships, etc.). We are aware that competition will be on a global scale and we will put in place the necessary means to preserve our shares in the source markets and develop new markets,” assures the manager.
