Le Monde: Morocco, new hub for lithium batteries for EV

Increasingly, companies specializing in the manufacturing of lithium batteries for electric cars are finding refuge in Morocco. For his part, he does not disappoint this enthusiasm. In recent years, the Kingdom has made great efforts to attract foreign investment, particularly from Chinese companies that have responded to these calls. Several of them have recently announced the launch of projects in the country. Like an iron fist in a velvet glove, Morocco is moving slowly but with sure steps towards excellence in the electric car sector. In a report, the French newspaper “Le Monde” recently shined the spotlight on the subtle strength of the Kingdom. “Chinese investments in Morocco have seen a significant increase in recent months, reaching around 10 billion euros.” The report states that “six major Chinese companies recently announced the launch of projects in the kingdom, and agreements have been signed with three of them.” The French newspaper indicated that the six Chinese companies involved are “BTR New Material”, “Tinci”, “CNGR Advanced Material”, “Gotion”, “Hailiang” and “Shinkoom”. He clarified that the common characteristic of these companies is their specialization in the production of batteries used in the manufacture of electric cars. Le Monde also highlighted the reasons that push Chinese companies to turn to Morocco to establish a local industry linked to the manufacturing of electric cars, highlighting the role of certain American and European decisions in this orientation. In this context, the same source indicated that the United States’ decision to increase taxes on Chinese battery components from 7.5% to 25%, as well as its intention to increase taxes on Chinese electric cars to 100%, in addition to the European Union’s efforts to impose customs duties on imports of Chinese electric cars, are all factors that have pushed Chinese companies to look for new alternatives. according to the same source, Morocco is an attractive destination for Chinese companies because of the solutions it offers, including the significant investment facilities provided by the Moroccan government, as well as its strategic location which makes it very close to Europe and the United States across the Atlantic Ocean. “Le Monde” also highlighted another attractive factor for the Chinese in Morocco: the free trade agreements between the kingdom, the United States and Europe, which exempt Chinese companies from certain taxes imposed in their country by Europeans and Americans.
