SMIT and Mohammed V University want to develop sports tourism

The two institutions concretize their partnership

Morocco is trying to develop more and more in the field of tourism. An effort to which Mohammed V University and the Moroccan Society of Tourism Engineering (SMIT) are contributing. Indeed, the two institutions signed a partnership in May 2016. As part of this partnership, a scientific day of tourism economics and management was organized, Thursday, March 2, 2017, by the Souissi Faculty of Legal, Economic and Social Sciences of Mohammed V University, in Rabat. This day took place under the theme: “Sustainable sports tourism and territorial development”.

This conference was an opportunity to shed light on the different aspects of sustainable sports tourism, but also its achievements, its challenges and its prospects. On this occasion, Imad Barrakad, chairman of the board of directors of SMIT, recalled everything that Morocco has done and the considerable efforts made to organize international sporting events. Thanks to these events, Morocco has been able to position itself as a key player in sport at the regional, continental and international levels. During his statement, Mr. Barrakad also mentioned the strong natural potential that Morocco has, allowing it to develop sports tourism. But that’s not all. According to Saaïd Amzazi, through the partnership signed with SMIT, Mohammed V University was able to create a research laboratory on tourism engineering. The university will also launch a master’s degree in tourism engineering.

A way of making this partnership a reality through permanent exchanges with SMIT, on the technical and scientific aspect. This exchange will take place in particular through internships which will be offered by SMIT to university students. Training that will enable the emergence of a new cutting-edge specialization, meeting the requirements and vision of Morocco in terms of developing tourism investment. The joint efforts of SMIT and Mohammed V University are being put in place to enable Morocco to better position itself compared to other destinations, and make this segment a lever for economic development at the regional and national levels. This is how Imad Barrakad explains that “the development of sports tourism is inseparable from our tourism vision, which has made it our mainstay to capture tourism investors and international demand”, before adding: “This product, in its three facets of action, spectacle and culture, constitutes a real source of income and jobs and a means of developing territories and their attractiveness.”
