Marriott plans to increase the number of its hotels in Africa

Marriott International plans to increase the number of its hotels in Africa by 50% by 2023. The American group announced on Monday five new projects to consolidate its presence in Morocco, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa and enter Mozambique.

“Marriott International, with the signatures (for these five new hotels), is on track to increase its portfolio by 50% with more than 200 hotels and 38,000 rooms by 2023, which should generate 12,000 new jobs,” underlines the hotel group in a press release, during a forum in Nairobi on investments in the sector.

Improved air connections and robust economic growth are supporting demand for hotels on the continent and have in recent years encouraged major global groups to invest to develop in sub-Saharan Africa.

Lately, Hyatt Hotels said it plans to double the number of its hotels in Africa by 2020. AccorHotels, for its part, said in an interview with Reuters that it was examining opportunities in several major African cities, with a billion-dollar prize pool thanks to a partnership with Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund.

Marriott International was created in 1993, following the division of Marriott Corporation into two companies (the other company created was first called Host Marriott Corporation, now Host Hotels & Resorts). Marriott is present in 130 countries, including 21 located in Africa.
