Earthquake in Morocco: the tourism sector in great limbo
Morocco, hit by a deadly earthquake, sees its booming tourism sector facing uncertainty. The significant increase in traveler arrivals in 2023 could be affected, despite the absence of massive requests for early departure so far.
Morocco, shaken by a devastating earthquake on the night of Friday September 8 to Saturday September 9, 2023, is facing an unprecedented human tragedy. However, beyond the human suffering and material damage, this event could also have an impact on the country’s tourism industry, reports Les Échos. While Morocco has been booming in tourism for several months, with a significant increase in traveler arrivals, it is legitimate to wonder how this natural disaster will affect this vital sector, representing nearly 7% of Moroccan GDP. During the first half of this year, Morocco recorded a spectacular 92% increase in tourist arrivals compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 6.5 million visitors, according to data from the Moroccan Tourism Observatory. Marrakech airport, which is located near the epicenter of the earthquake and is one of the country’s key tourist destinations, saw an impressive 91% increase in attendance.
