Economic exchanges between Morocco and Tunisia obstacles and prospects on October 19, 2018 in Tunis
However, the fact to remember is less the persistent imbalance in the trade balance on the Moroccan side, than the modest pace and volume of bilateral trade, at a time when the two countries have a pressing need to strengthen their exports and promote youth employment, in particular through improving their attractiveness as destinations for foreign investment.
The two countries have unfortunately still not succeeded in reaching the value of 500 million US dollars that the 17th Mixed High Commission held in 2012, had established as an objective to be achieved by 2020. Competition, all in all normal between the two economies, cannot be invoked to justify neither the stagnation of trade between the two countries nor the delay in the search for complementarities on the ground, particularly on the African continent, which has great potential and economic opportunities.
Moreover, the situation of bilateral investments is characterized by a very modest progression both in terms of the number and nature of the sectors involved and the number and size of the companies established. The mobilization of capital between Morocco and Tunisia remains rare and ephemeral and therefore does not contribute to job creation.
Wishing to contribute to a common reflection on possible means and paths to take to boost global economic exchanges between Morocco and Tunisia, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Tunis is organizing, in partnership with the Association of Former Tunisian Students in Morocco, on October 19, 2018 at the Acropole-Tunis hotel, a meeting-debate, under the theme: « Economic exchanges between Morocco and Tunisia obstacles and prospects« .
The work of this meeting will be opened by HE Zied Laâdheri, Minister of Development, Investment and International Cooperation, and HE Hichem ben Ahmed, Secretary of State for Foreign Trade.
Several representatives of Moroccan and Tunisian employers, as well as personalities from the business community and experts will speak during the scheduled panels dedicated in particular to the issues of investment and trade between Morocco and Tunisia.
