The pleasure of getting lost in the mazes of the Taourirt kasbah

At first glance, the immensity of the kasbah which sits like an oasis in the middle of the desert is surprising. The adobe buildings stand accompanied by crenellated towers. The backdrop is magical, with the Atlas Mountains silhouetted in the distance. Nearly 300 rooms, dating from the 19th century, bear witness to the richness of this monument. The place, worthy of a palace, overlooks the main square of Ouarzazate, and from the rooms you can see the old medina.

The kasbah is located opposite the Ouarzazate studios, where the biggest Hollywood producers flocked to film American blockbusters. To name just a few: Gladiator, Game Of Thrones, Kingdom of Heaven, have taken up residence for a few months in the heavenly surroundings.

The citadel is one of the most beautiful in Morocco. Mosaic, stucco decorations and cedar wood ceilings sit alongside skylights. Lose yourself in the multitude of rooms, which follow one another but are hardly alike. Delve into the maze of winding stairs and multiple endless corridors.

At the top of the kasbah, a terrace offers a remarkable view of the fortified Berber village of Taourirt, dating from the 13th century. Take a moment to drink a coffee on the terrace and watch the Saharan sunset over the heavenly landscape of the village of Taourirt. You will be able to have access to some rooms of the old apartments, including the dining room, the favorite’s bedroom and the multiple reception rooms.

You will be able to capture the wonder in the eyes of the children, captivated by the former residence of the pasha of Marrakech, Thami El Glaoui. The place is ideal for family visits. The memory will stay with you for a long time. To complete the immersion in the desert, head towards the back of the building, a few families still live in the ruins.
