Air: The North connects to the Balearic Islands
After Air Arabia and Transavia, it is the turn of the airline Albastar to announce a new air connection with Tangier. Unveiled at the Fitur trade fair in Madrid last January, the connection has just been presented in Tangier to local tourism operators and stakeholders. For Albastar, this involves connecting Palma de Mallorca, one of the largest Balearic islands, with Tangier initially on a weekly basis. The inaugural flight will take place on June 15 and its main target, according to Abdelghani Ragala, director of the CRT, is the foreign tourist passing through the Balearic Islands.
“These islands in fact welcome around 20 million tourists per year, a profitable windfall for Tangier,” indicates tourism delegate Said Labassi. These are mainly British tourists but mainly German. Profiles who could be attracted by the idea of spending an additional stay in Morocco, even if the duration may seem a little long, for travelers looking for a weekend. However, company officials assure that in the long term, a 2nd frequency could be set up.
Note that the flight is not only of interest to European tourists but also to MREs based in these islands. Indeed, the Moroccan community in the Balearic Islands is around 50,000 people strong, enough to also ensure a correct occupancy rate for Albastar planes. This is the first time that a direct connection by plane has been offered to them. Previously, MREs from these islands had to pass through the Iberian Peninsula either by plane or by boat, which lengthened the journey which is currently only one hour and 45 minutes.
The objective of Albastar and its Moroccan partner, the tour operator Saif Travel, is also to satisfy the appetites of nationals interested in a vacation in the Balearic Islands. Packages including flight and accommodation are offered as part of promotional offers.
Albastar is a Spanish airline headquartered in Palma de Mallorca. It was founded in November 2009, thanks to the initiative of Italian and British entrepreneurs working in the tourism and transport sector. The initial objective was to provide charter air transport services from the main Italian airports to the most demanded destinations and then expand to other destinations.
