Safi: A website to promote its heritage

A 2.0 initiative. For 4 years, audiovisual professionals have been traveling through towns and villages collecting hundreds of videos to preserve in images the oral, material and intangible heritage of Morocco. Marocopédia is a solidarity encyclopedia on the web accessible free of charge in 4 languages: Arabic, Amazigh, French and English.

Continuing this work, a web documentary on the city of Safi has just been launched online, in collaboration with the Badira association, dedicated to communication and social development. A bible of texts, photographs and videos that covers 10 centuries of history, that of people, music, crafts, nature and the associative world.

A true visual travel diary which presents in a non-exhaustive manner all the cultural potential of this city located on the Atlantic Ocean. The site “safi.marocopedia.com” brings together the first 19 videos on its culture and history. In particular, we discover testimonies from renowned historians, anthropologists and specialists who tell the history of the great mosque, the Beddouza lighthouse, the mausoleum of the seven Jewish saints, but also that of Safiot pottery, artisans, the different techniques and working tools of the potters, and music throughout Melhoune and Aïta.

Historian Hamid Triki from the Safi memory association appears there for an express tour of the city’s key sites in 7 minutes. Marocopédia and its partner Matekap have also launched the mobile application, to download for free. Right on trend! This initiative also chose to exhibit large format photographs of this trip on the walls of certain buildings.

An approach, in partnership with the French alliance of Safi, which is part of the support of urban art and the Street Art caravan event, which gave carte blanche to artists to create giant works in the emblematic spaces of the city. This exhibition is also a good way to invite Safiotes to rediscover their culture and historical heritage.

In the same vein, remember that a virtual museum on Jemaa El Fna square was launched last year with the same objective of preserving heritage. Films, sound recordings, photographs and testimonies have been put online to help people discover the art of Halqa and its artists who enliven the famous square in Marrakech every day.
